Hi!
My name is Marcus Walther and this is my first blog. I wanted to give my history and show the path I have followed and created. I felt confused about who and what I was all through high school. I was active in band, where I played the euphonium and bass trombone. However, my heart was not in it. At the suggestion and urging of my trig teacher, I took up track. I gave up band. I ran cross country initially to get in shape, but then ran more short distance - 200, 300, 400, relays. Also practiced pole vaulting, long jump, triple jump, and the high jump. All this activity was good for me and helped to flesh out my gangly body. I still felt like a bit of a geek. I felt socially inept at times. I became active in my church youth group as well. It was a fun bunch in a Lutheran church. I had been through confirmation years earlier, but then was not in church much for 2-3 years. Senior year I even became President. On a retreat one summer, I met the singing group, Earth Arise, and was excited to join when I learned they were based in Annandale. I felt busy. It now makes me wonder what I was avoiding. Was I needing to keep busy? College choices began to haunt me and I wanted to get away from home, but my parents wouldn't let me apply to Cal Berkeley. So I applied to UVA and to the College of William and Mary.
